The recent events in that we have seen in the news are great examples of conflict. Our world is filled with conflict. In a 1969 song, John Lennon made a statement that is just as relevant today as it was 45 years ago, and probably will be still be in another 45 years; “All we are saying, is give peace a chance.”
The problem with conflict is that, in the human mind, it requires retaliation. Conflict breeds conflict. But as Christians we are required to rise above conflict and strive for peace. The Apostle Paul commands us saying, “If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.” (Romans 12:18)
Looking deeper into the context surrounding that statement we read, “18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:18-21)
It’s not enough that we don’t retaliate, we are to promote peace, and we are to do so by showing charity to those that would participate in conflict against us. We are to be the example. This isn’t an easy command to obey but with prayer and love conflict can be reduced. In Jesus name.
